April 11th (Saturday) - Introduction to Recreational Kayaking - (AKA - Kayaking 101) this is a informative demo intended for person that are interested in getting into recreational Kayaking and do not presently have a Kayak topic covered picking a boat, boat and Paddle sizing, kayak water safety, basic paddle strokes, Safe Kayak Transport, protecting the Kayaking environment - Invasive plants and water species, Etc. at The White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield (Classroom). Free, but reservations are required. Please contact WMF as class size is limited. May 3rd - Quassy Paddle Day (Sunday) - Open Paddle Day - Kayak and Canoes. Again this year we will hold a Spring and Fall Quasssy Paddle Day located Quassy Amusement Park (Rain or Shine) Quassy has offered us the use of there water access to the pristine lake with only a parking fee although all that want to paddle must pay a modest USCA (United States Canoe Association) insurance fee of $3.75 and sign a USCA waiver to enter the water) The Park should be open and rides running (check their web-site) so bring the family and enjoy the day. Also Hope for Sun as it has rained or it was cloudy every time we have done these!! We hope to make this major area paddling event someday bring all the area Paddlers and Clubs together, Please come and join us! May 9th (Saturday) - 2nd Annual NECKRA Naugatuck River Race and Festival - Kayak and Canoe Race - (Racers need not be NECKRA members to race) Waterbury to Beacon Falls. This 6.0 Novice or 6.5 Expert Kayak and Canoe Race was the talk of Connecticut in 2008 as the largest Paddle Sports Race in the state the first year out. NECKRA states "The Naugatuck River is an excellent race river and adds a challenging and fun addition to our "Down River Points Series". The event will Feature a pre-Race Rock Concert in Naugatuck, a Race Day Blues Music Fest in Beacon Falls along with Food, Fun and Race Victory Ceremony. Come race with the National Champions and enjoy a great day at the Naugy as we celebrate her revival! June 20th (Saturday) - Kayaking Demo - Ansonia Nature Center - Donna of the Ansonia Nature Center and Connecticut Outdoors,LLC offer this talk on recreational Kayaking along a short paddle at the confluence of the Houstonic and Naugatuck River if you would like to try Kayaking, this interesting natural area is full of interesting history and the Greenway walk makes this a neat place top paddle. This Demo is free to persons that do not presently have a Kayak and may be interested in getting involved in recreational Kayaking. We will cover topics that a beginner should know after we will have a casual discussion where you can ask any questions that you may have. We may offer a water Demo at the conclusion of the discussion along with the opportunity for the participants to join in and try a kayak for the first time in a controlled environment safely. We believe that kayaking is extremely safe and most new kayakers are often amazed how stable and easy to paddle recreational kayaks really are. Topics covered; Choosing the proper boat for your planned use. Choosing the correct type and length paddle. Fitting yourself properly in a Kayak.
