DEP at the The Coast Guard CT Fire Academy 34 Perimeter Rd, Windsor Locks, CT Paddle Sports retailers, Clubs and Organizations. Safety discussions & lots of information and an in pool Demo! (We hope to be there again!) Free Admission!! 10:00AM - 5:00PM April 10th (Saturday) - Introduction to Recreational Kayaking - (AKA - Kayaking 101) this is an informative demo intended for persons that are interested in getting into recreational Kayaking and do not presently have a Kayak/s. Topics covered are picking a boat, boat and paddle sizing, kayak water safety, basic paddle strokes, Safe Kayak Transport, protecting the Kayaking environment - Invasive plants and water species, Etc. The Class is at The White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield (Cedar Room). Cost is: $6.00 for members of WMF and $10.00 for non-members. Reservations are required. Please contact WMF as class size is limited. April 24th (Saturday) Naugatuck River Clean-up, the NVOC, the Beacon Falls Merchants Association, the Beacon Falls Lions and Lionesses, Local Boy Scouts Troops and others are all teaming up to help clean the river and banks, we are planning to remove as many shopping carts out of the river we can and we will also need an in-river team that will have Come-a-longs, Pull Straps, rope and chains with hooks to pull those carts out. We normally break up into groups and start at different spots from Waterbury to Beacon Falls although we would like to focus on the Naugatuck Parks at the river's edge this year. All you have to do to join in is bring Trash Bags, Gloves and will to make a big difference!! Please contact us to be added to the volunteers' list! Thanks Dave May 2nd (Sunday) - Quassy Paddle Day - Open Paddle Day - Kayak and Canoes. Again this year we will hold a Spring and Fall Quassy Paddle Day located at Quassy Amusement Park (Rain or Shine). Quassy has offered us the use of their water access to the pristine lake with only a $5.00 parking fee although the park requires that we insure all persons that want to paddle, a modest ACA (American Canoe Association) insurance fee of $3.00 and a signed ACA waiver to enter the water) The Park should be open and rides running (check their web-site) so bring the family and enjoy the day. Also Hope for Sun as it has rained or it was cloudy every time we have done these!! We hope to make this a major area paddling event someday bringing all the area Paddlers and Clubs together, Please come and join us! May 8th (Saturday) - 3rd Annual Naugatuck Valley River Race, 5K and Festival - Kayak, Canoe Race and 5K Road Race - Waterbury to Beacon Falls. This 6.5 Novice or 7.0 Expert Kayak and Canoe Race was the talk of Connecticut in 2009 as the largest Paddle Sports Event in New England and gaining popularity. This year we have teamed up with a local Charity 5K run/walk race. The event will feature an Environmental, Food and Music festival in Beacon Falls as racers and Runners enter into town Via the "Naugy" at around the same time. Come Enjoy a Great Day on the "Naugy" as we celebrate her continued revival! (See more on our Naugatuck River Race please see our Naugatuck River page). Race slogan "The River is the Winner". June 5th & 6th (Saturday & Sunday) - Quassy R3 Trialthion - come watch 1000 competitors Swim, Cycle and Run from Quassy through Middlebury and return. This is a major primer to the national Tri. We again will be providing Water Safety for the Swimmers during the practices and the official races. June 6th (Sunday) - Duck Race and the Earth Day Celebrations. Maple Street Bridge and on the Naugatuck Green. Come enjoy the Duck Race and enjoy the live music on the green along with Environmental displays. We will be there!! Cost: $10.00 for members of WMF and $14.00 for non-members, classroom session, also there is a required $3.00 per Paddler ACA insurance fee for anyone that plans to enter the water. September 10th 11th and 12th - 86th Annual Bethlehem Fair - We will be there with a display, please come enjoy the Food, Music and the Fun of this great Fair. September 25th (Saturday) - Family Nature Day at the White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield, Live Music, Environmental Displays, Games, Displays, Animals Fun for the little ones. See their web-site link on our home page for more info on this great event. We are again donation a Kayak, Paddle and accessories to be raffled off during the event. A monomial donation is requested to enter the grounds. *More Events and Paddling Demos are coming so keep posted. We are currently working on our 2010 events schedule, please let us know if you have a event that you would like us involved with, we do consider all requests. We will cover topics that a beginner should know after we will have a casual discussion where you can ask any questions that you may have. We may offer a water Demo at the conclusion of the discussion along with the opportunity for the participants to join in and try a kayak for the first time in a controlled environment safely. We believe that kayaking is extremely safe and most new kayakers are often amazed at how stable and easy to paddle recreational kayaks really are. Topics covered; Choosing the proper boat for your planned use. Choosing the correct type and length paddle. Fitting yourself properly in a Kayak.
